I am not able to bear all these people alone, because the burden is too heavy for me. If You treat me like this, please kill me here and now—if I have found favor in Your sight—and do not let me see my wretchedness!”

NUMBERS 11:14-15

But he himself went a day’s journey into the wilderness, and came and sat down under a broom tree. And he prayed that he might die, and said, “It is enough! Now, Lord, take my life, for I am no better than my fathers!”

1 KINGS 19:4

Then Jesus said to them, “My soul is exceedingly sorrowful, even to death. Stay here and watch with Me.”

MATTHEW 26:38

Above in Numbers 11:14-15, we see the children of Israel were more than a handful for Moses, a burden too much to bear, so much so that he asked God to kill him.

How did God answer Moses’s prayer to kill him?

So the Lord said to Moses: “Gather to Me seventy men of the elders of Israel, whom you know to be the elders of the people and officers over them; bring them to the tabernacle of meeting, that they may stand there with you. Then I will come down and talk with you there. I will take of the Spirit that is upon you and will put the same upon them; and they shall bear the burden of the people with you, that you may not bear it yourself alone,” (Numbers 11:16-17).

God answered Moses by relieving his burden seventy fold. He answered with love, mercy, and understanding.

In 1 Kings 19:4 above, we see also Elijah asking God to kill him. 

It’s not God’s will to kill us, it’s His will to give us life and give it more abundantly. Both Moses and Elijah were simply physically, mentally, and emotionally exhausted which resulted in their prayers of desperation because the flesh is limited. But we can cry out to the One who makes a way.

How did God answer Elijah’s prayer to kill him? 

Then as he lay and slept under a broom tree, suddenly an angel touched him, and said to him, “Arise and eat.” Then he looked, and there by his head was a cake baked on coals, and a jar of water. So he ate and drank, and lay down again. And the angel of the Lord came back the second time, and touched him, and said, “Arise and eat, because the journey is too great for you.” So he arose, and ate and drank; and he went in the strength of that food forty days and forty nights as far as Horeb, the mountain of God,” (1 Kings 19:5-8). 

God answered by showing him he needed to rest and miraculously provided food and water for him twice. Once again, He answered with love, mercy, and understanding.

Finally, in Matthew 26:38, we have Jesus, the King of glory Himself, in anguish in response to the human flesh that enveloped him. 

But glory to our Lord Jesus Christ who took it all the wrath of God upon Himself for us, so the works of the devil are destroyed in our lives when we take Him for His Word by faith.

Seeing in the Word above that God cares about the burdens we bear should increase our faith to pray because faith comes by hearing and hearing by the Word of God.

The Prayer

Lord, Your name is Faithful and True, and I see in Your Word that You care deeply about the burdens I bear, that You see that what I bear can be too much for me, and is right now. Your Word, the truth, shows me You heart towards Your children and that You are willing to relieve my burdens when I cry out to You as You did for Moses and Elijah.

I am Your blood bought, beloved child, and You are my Father who cherishes me and knows the number of hairs on my head. You love me so much that You gave Your Son for me. I cry out to You knowing that relief of my burdens is on its way even now. I will walk by faith and not by sight and take You for Your Word that You are Deliverer and Waymaker and that many are the afflictions of the righteous but You deliver us from them all. And that includes me because I am fully righteous by Jesus Christ. It’s in Jesus’ name I pray, amen.
