Don’t Allow the Enemy to Make You Your Own Worst Enemy – And How to Win the Battles

own worst enemy don't

God’s sons and daughters can allow the enemy to plant lies and accept them as their own, allowing them to also become rooted. Thus, the enemy can succeed in making a child of God their own worst enemy.

HOW TO WIN THESE BATTLES…

1. Know the Word for yourself, so you are always ready to answer the enemy with it to take every thought (lie) captive and make them obey Christ, the Word.

“For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal but mighty in God for pulling down strongholds, casting down arguments and every high thing that exalts itself against the knowledge of God, bringing every thought into captivity to the obedience of Christ,” (2 Corinthians 10:4-5).

For example, when the mind is attacked with the lie of the enemy:

LIE: “You’re never going to be free from that situation.”

Answer with the promise of God, believing it as fact, “Many are the afflictions of the righteous, but the Lord delivers us from them all,” (Psalm 34:19). Since this promise is for you, you can also boldly and confidently say, “Many are the afflictions of the righteous, but the Lord delivers ME from them all.”

LIE: “You’ll always be sick and lame.”

Answer with a promise of God, believing it as fact, “Be Jesus’ stripes, I WAS healed.” Or, from Proverbs 4:20-22, “God’s Word is life and health to my body, so I speak His Word to my body and it has life and health.”

Note, the enemy will also use people around you to speak his lies, even God’s children, because they don’t know the Word for themselves.

Knowing the Word for ourselves doesn’t mean knowing it second hand through a pastor who may or may not even be interpreting the Word correctly depending on his willingness to fully submit to the Holy Spirit as his main Teacher and Guide through the Word.

We are blessed to live in a time where, as we learn the Word, we can easily search for any promise of God related to our situation online. It’s a great idea to print or write out the promises and put them where you can easily see them, pray and declare them.

2. Know there is an enemy seeking to steal, kill, and destroy, seeking whom he MAY devour.

“The thief does not come except to steal, and to kill, and to destroy. I have come that they may have life, and that they may have it more abundantly,” (John 10:10).

If one is unaware to begin with of the reality of an enemy who isn’t into child’s play but is seeking to steal from, destroy, and kill us, then one can become the thief’s effortless, easily devoured prey.

“Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil walks about like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour,” (1 Peter 5:8).

A child of God doesn’t have to become a MAY. What posture must we stay in to avoid the snake’s devouring? Sober. Vigilant. Readied with the Word. And God says we can be kept in perfect peace through it because our minds are fixed on Him.

“You will keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on You, because he trusts in You,” (Isaiah 26:3).

He wouldn’t say it if it were not possible. This will only happen when we get His Word, promises, and truth rooted in us.

“Finally, brethren, whatever things are true, whatever things are noble, whatever things are just, whatever things are pure, whatever things are lovely, whatever things are of good report, if there is any virtue and if there is anything praiseworthy—meditate on these things. The things which you learned and received and heard and saw in me, these do, and the God of peace will be with you,” (Philippians 4:8-9).

The Word of God fully equips us for everything the enemy throws at us.

3. Know born again believers are under a new covenant, established and paid in full by Jesus, with new and better promises and that we are no longer slaves but children of God.

“But now He has obtained a more excellent ministry, inasmuch as He is also Mediator of a better covenant, which was established on better promises,” (Hebrews 8:6).

God is not dealing with us as He did in the law under a blessing and cursing covenant. Jesus fully fulfilled the law for us and took all its curse upon Himself. E.g. The curse of the law included sickness which Jesus took all of on His body by His stripes.

“I will be a Father to you, and you shall be My sons and daughters, says the Lord Almighty,” (2 Corinthians 6:18).

“But as many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become children of God, to those who believe in His name,” (John 1:12).

“But when the fullness of the time had come, God sent forth His Son, born of a woman, born under the law, to redeem those who were under the law, that we might receive the adoption as sons. And because you are sons, God has sent forth the Spirit of His Son into your hearts, crying out, “Abba, Father!” Therefore you are no longer a slave but a son, and if a son, then an heir of God through Christ,” (Galatians 4:4-7).

To summarize, it all boils down to knowing the Word for ourselves and walking with the Lord by the Spirit, knowing the full power of God dwells in every child of God.

“But without faith it is impossible to please Him, for he who comes to God must believe that He is, and that He is a rewarder of those who diligently seek Him,” (Hebrews 11:6).

That He is, is the Great I AM who rewards those who diligently – how? – diligently seek Him.

I pray this helps and blesses someone who really needs it. It is the calling of every believer to build up his sisters and brothers.

  1. GREAT word! So true. The enemy also kicks us when we are down, all to push us to the brink of denying God’s power and capitulating in defeat!
