BOOK REVIEW: Autism Healed: One Woman’s Fight to Save Her Sons by Deborah McDermott

“And they overcame him by the blood of the Lamb and by the word of their testimony,” (Revelation 12:11).

Testimonies are powerful fans that flame our faith. Deborah McDermott shares an incredible testimony in her book, Autism Healed: One Woman’s Fight to Save Her Sons, where not one but both of her sons are totally healed and delivered from autism spectrum disorder – with documented medical proof.

It’s so important for believers to share their victories in Christ with one another – it’s one of the things the Lord says will help us overcome (Revelations 12:11).

Both of her sons did not receive instantaneous healings. Their healings were progressive over the course of a few years. This fighting mama stood on the Word of God from a place of victory – the victory Jesus purchased for your child tooBy His stripes, we were healed (1 Peter 2:24).

Despite her sons’ symptoms going up and down at times, she refused to believe anything except the Word and promises of God.

Throughout her testimony, you see her as a regular mom with imperfections just like us. She’s not a super-Christian. No she simply believed the Lord’s report.

I appreciated how candid she was about the destruction autism brought to her family, marriage, and sanity. It’s so clear that God was not the Author of the severe disorder and chaos that autism caused. His Word says so as well, “For God is NOT the Author of DISORDER but of peace,” (1 Corinthians 14:33).

At one point, the oppression and torment autism brought to Deborah led her to a short period of drinking a glass of hard liquor daily to take the edge off an unbearable situation. I’m so glad she wasn’t embarrassed to leave out this fact because it reminds us that we don’t receive from God based on our perfections but on being made perfect IN Christ.

We receive His promises by faith through grace. Not based on works. Lest we boast in those works. No, because we receive by faith alone, we can boast in Jesus alone.

This precious mama’s struggles remind me of: “Elijah was a man with a nature like ours, and he prayed earnestly that it would not rain; and it did not rain on the land for three years and six months,” (James 5:17).

If you’re standing for healing for your son or daughter – don’t look at yourself – look at Jesus. He already healed your child by His stripes 2000 years ago. And you are worthy to receive from Him because your worth IN Christ is His worth. You too can receive healing by faith for your child.

Be like Abraham and our sister Deborah:

“And not being weak in faith, he (Abraham) did not consider his own body, already dead (since he was about a hundred years old), and the deadness of Sarah’s womb. He did not waver at the promise of God through unbelief, but was strengthened in faith, giving glory to God, and being fully convinced that what He had promised He was also able to perform,” Romans 4:19-21).

Deborah did not accept autism spectrum disorder for her sons nor considered the fluctuation of symptoms or that autism was considered to be an incurable disorder. She did not waver at the promise of God – by Jesus’ stripes her sons were healed. But she was strengthened in faith, giving glory to God being fully convinced that what He had promised – her sons were healed – He was also able to perform.

And both her sons were healed just as the Lord promised and promises you as well.

I highly recommend reading her book. It will strengthen your faith.

You’re welcome. I’ve watched your testimony countless times as well standing IN Christ in faith for my son’s total healing. He’s now 19, his symptoms have gone up and down but still more on an upward slant at the same time. But I believe he was healed by Jesus’ stripes, and I will see it. Thank you for your honesty in your book. It’s so important for the world to know the real reason we receive from the Lord – Jesus Christ. Feel free to share it wherever you’d like. I’ve recommended your book many times. God bless you.
