If we try to please God by what we do, that’s not faith. That’s self-righteousness, works, faith in self. In other words, dead, fruitless faith.
For example, if one desires to receive physical healing, and there are still symptoms present, they may begin to question, “But Lord, I’ve prayed. I’ve fasted. I’ve tithed.” That’s faith in what one has done. Not in Jesus Christ and His righteousness alone. Those deeds in and of themselves have no power.
When we ask in faith, we believe we’ve received whatever we’ve asked from the Lord because we came to Him in His righteousness entirely apart from any of our deeds (Mark 11:23; Romans 3:28).
