Keep Your Eyes on Jesus and His Word Alone (Not on Other People — Not Even Other Christians)

There was a time when the Lord spoke something very clear and life-changing to me:

“Never compare yourself to other people — not to the world, not to other Christians, not to anyone. Keep your eyes on Me.”

It wasn’t just a passing thought. It was a direct correction and warning.
The reason He said this was because even if someone calls themselves a Christian, it does not guarantee that they are living fully by the Word of God, free from traditions, personal opinions, and unbelief.

Many Christians, unfortunately, are not speaking from the Spirit of Truth but are bound by their own denominational teachings, family traditions, emotions, or deeply ingrained beliefs that they simply refuse to surrender — no matter how clearly the Word of God lays out the truth.

This is why it is critical for those in Christ to remember:
We walk by faith — by the Word of God — not by sight, not by opinions, not by popularity, and not by the traditions of men.

“For we walk by faith, not by sight.” (2 Corinthians 5:7, NKJV)

“Test all things; hold fast what is good.” (1 Thessalonians 5:21, NKJV)

“For not he who commends himself is approved, but whom the Lord commends. For we dare not class ourselves or compare ourselves with those who commend themselves. But they, measuring themselves by themselves, and comparing themselves among themselves, are not wise.” (2 Corinthians 10:12, NKJV)

People Cling to Their Traditions Over God’s Truth

Since the Lord gave me that word of wisdom above, I have observed — in interacting with others Christians and listening carefully to their words — just how true His warning was.

Even when you lay out the Word of God clearly, with confirmation after confirmation, showing what His truth is, plain as day, many will not receive it. Their personal traditions, family upbringing, emotional attachments, or denominational teachings have become too precious to them. They simply will not surrender their private beliefs in exchange for the pure truth of God’s Word.

A powerful and recent example is from a blog post I wrote, exposing the spiritual danger in calling yourself an “autism mom.”
(If you haven’t read that post yet, I highly encourage you to read it.)

In that post, I laid out clearly from the Word of God why embracing a disorder identity is completely unscriptural. Yet, even when presented with not the opinions of man but God’s truth, many Christians will STILL hold on tightly – think vice grip – to their denominational traditions, what the doctors’ reports say and on and on.

Why the Lord wanted me to share this?

Going back to the original word of wisdom the Lord gave me: “Never compare yourself to other people — not to the world, not to other Christians, not to anyone. Keep your eyes on Me.”

Just because something is coming from a Christian’s mouth, including pastors, that doesn’t mean it’s God’s truth! BUT if we let the Word alone BE our faith, test the spirits behind words that are spoken, and shine the Light of God’s Word onto people’s words, THEN we can see they are not His Word.

Our safest position to guard us from deception it to keep our eyes on Jesus Christ alone and His Word ALONE – and that means His Word IN CONTEXT!

Many Choose Their Traditions Over God’s Report

Jesus warned about this very thing:

“Thus you have made the commandment of God of no effect by your tradition.” (Matthew 15:6, NKJV)

“And in vain they worship Me, teaching as doctrines the commandments of men.” (Matthew 15:9, NKJV)

It’s not that they’re “bad people.”
They might be kind, generous, loving, and sincere children of God.
But being sincere does not equal taking God for His Word alone.

If they refuse to surrender their traditions and emotions to the pure Word of God, they will continue to sow unbelief, speak unbelief, and live with the consequences of that unbelief — often without even realizing it.

The Danger of Absorbing Other People’s Unbelief

I say again, this is why the Lord told me:
“Never compare yourself to other people — not to the world, not to other Christians, not to anyone. Keep your eyes on Me.”

If you are standing for healing — for your child, your spouse, yourself — you cannot afford to absorb other people’s unbelief.

Because if you are not careful, you will be led astray.

You will find yourself confused, discouraged, double-minded, and wavering — not because God’s Word failed, but because we can allow unbelief to be sown into your heart through the influence of someone else’s traditions, doubts, or wrong teachings.

Jesus Himself said:

“Take heed what you hear.” (Mark 4:24, NKJV)

Paul said:

“Do not be deceived: ‘Evil company corrupts good habits.’” (1 Corinthians 15:33, NKJV)

We must test everything.
We must be like the Bereans — searching the Scriptures daily, not blindly accepting anything someone says just because they carry the label “Christian” or “pastor.”

“These were more fair-minded than those in Thessalonica, in that they received the word with all readiness, and searched the Scriptures daily to find out whether these things were so.” (Acts 17:11, NKJV)

Narrow is the Path

Jesus made it very clear:

“Enter by the narrow gate; for wide is the gate and broad is the way that leads to destruction, and there are many who go in by it.
Because narrow is the gate and difficult is the way which leads to life, and there are few who find it.” (Matthew 7:13-14, NKJV)

Many who are truly saved are not willing to fully walk the narrow way of full surrender to the Word.
They will not give up their traditions.
They will not give up what their family taught them.
They will not risk hurting someone’s feelings by standing boldly on the Word alone.

And because of that, they forfeit walking fully in the promises of God.

They are still loved by God. They are still saved if they have placed their faith in Jesus Christ. But they are not walking in the full victory Jesus paid for.

Conclusion: Keep Your Eyes on Jesus and His Word Alone

This is why it is absolutely vital:
Keep your eyes on Jesus alone.
Keep your heart anchored in the Word of God alone.

“Looking unto Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith…” (Hebrews 12:2, NKJV)

Don’t compare yourself to others.
Don’t assume that because someone calls themselves a Christian, everything they say is truth.
Test it yourself.
Study it yourself.
Believe God’s Word above all else.

“Let God be true but every man a liar.” (Romans 3:4, NKJV)

Choose His report.
Choose His Word.
Choose the narrow road.
And you will see His promises fulfilled for it is written that faith and patience inherit them.
