“I do not pray for these alone, but also for those who will believe in Me through their word; that they all may be one, as You, Father, are in Me, and I in You; that they also may be one in Us, that the world may believe that You sent Me. And the glory which You gave Me I have given them, that they may be one just as We are one.”
JOHN 17:20-22
Jesus prayed that we, His church, be one. Why? That the world, the lost, may “believe that You sent Me.”
It’s no surprise then that the devil, the “principalities, powers, rulers of the darkness of this age, spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places” (Ephesians 6:12) plot, plan, and scheme to divide the church in every way possible.
“And no wonder! For Satan himself transforms himself into an angel of light. Therefore it is no great thing if his ministers also transform themselves into ministers of righteousness, whose end will be according to their works,” (2 Corinthians 11:14-15).
After being led by the Holy Spirit through His Word on the matter of denominations and the myriad of -isms, it is clear that these man-made side doctrines, not in the Word of God, are not God’s will, contradict His Word (John 17:20-22), and were inspired by the enemy, masquerading as an angel of light to the divide the church again, again, and again.
“And we know that all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are the called according to His purpose,” (Romans 8:28).
Because God is good and merciful, He will cause our free will choices to work together for our good.
But truly, umpteen denominations and -isms are not God’s will and passionate desire for us because they divide greatly and do not unite us as one.
“Behold, how good and how pleasant it is for brethren to dwell together in unity” (Psalm 133:1).
I can’t take credit for this revelation, but on one of my social media accounts, someone commented that in mathematics, the “denominator” is the bottom number of a fraction which divides. E.g. 1/99, the number 99 is the denominator.
We get the meaning of the word “denominations” from the same root as denominator. Every denomination and other man-made side doctrine outside of the Word are intended to divide His church. Period.
This is not God’s will. No, denominations are man’s free will exercised in opposition to and despite knowledge of John 17:20-22, were inspired by the father of lies, and were often borne of pride, unbelief, intellectualism (interpreting the Word with the natural mind and not being led into the truth by the Holy Spirit), and elitism.
“Therefore He is also able to save to the uttermost those who come to God through Him, since He always lives to make intercession for them,” (Hebrews 7:25).
Anyone with eyes to see and ears to hear, with discernment by the Holy Spirit, knows the Lord is calling us to be as one so the lost will know that Jesus is truly the Way, the Son of God, the Hope of glory.
He prays now for His church to wake up and shed our man-made side doctrines and come under His Word and authority alone. To be deceived by the divisive devices of the enemy no more.
“Now the multitude of those who believed were of one heart and one soul; neither did anyone say that any of the things he possessed was his own, but they had all things in common. And with great power the apostles gave witness to the resurrection of the Lord Jesus. And great grace was upon them all,” (Acts 4:32-33).
What happens when the church obeys Him and operates of “one heart and one soul”? We are powerful witnesses for Christ operating with great grace upon us ALL.
“And Micaiah said, ‘As the Lord lives, whatever the Lord says to me, that I will speak,’” (1 Kings 22:14).
His Word shows, corrects, guides, not to condemn because there is no condemnation for those in Christ, but because He desires His best for us. And His best is not a weak, ineffective, divided, and powerless church but one that glorifies Him, destroys the works of the devil in His name, and gets people set free. This is what He showed me in the Word, so this is what I speak or in this case write.
He didn’t pour out His Spirit on us that we cork it up for ourselves. He poured out His Spirit on all flesh so it could flow from us as living water and minister to the world. O that we be one, so the world could really see our beloved Jesus.
Prayer
Father, in light of Your Word, I boldly share these Spirit led words and pray that Your lukewarm church wake up. Wake up so we can be one, in Your will, and an effective, powerful force for Christ by the Holy Spirit, for Your glory. So the world will be drawn unto You by the clear evidence we display “that Jesus was sent by You.” I pray Your church can humble itself and put You and Your Word first for the saving and setting free of many in Jesus’ name, amen.
